I finished the artwork for this book back in July 2020 – with the bulk of the work done during the UK’s first Covid lockdown. Now, in January 2021, we are in our third lockdown, and a package arrived from Australia with my preview copies.
I’m really pleased with the printing, especially given that I only saw the printed proofs on Zoom, and couldn’t do my own test prints whilst working on this book (the illustrations are fully digital).
The theme of friendship is key to this book – it follows a group of kids as they come up brilliant ways to have fun with the giant spoon, and work together to return it to the giant. I’m very conscious that something so apparently ‘normal’ (kids playing with their friends) is currently not possible for many, and hope that my drawings remind people how important this kind of play is, so that when it’s safe to do so we (adults) help kids to regain these opportunities.
