I’ve always loved drawing stories. As a child this sometimes got me into trouble (e.g. funny illustrated tales of mischief that didn’t go down well with teachers, heavily inspired by Minnie the Minx and Ivy the Terrible!) but also gave me a huge sense of creative freedom. I could visualise whatever story or idea was in my head.
I rediscovered this feeling of freedom and means of communication when I took short courses in product design and illustration in my early 20s. I developed my sketching, digital and story skills through postgraduate study and then got my very first mini-commission with a personalised picture book (for a girl who loved ‘bumpy-nosed witches’). From that point onwards I’ve developed my practice through self-directed and freelance work, including Aussie picture book The Giant Spoon (2021), collaborations with Creation Theatre (2021 – 2023), World Book Day and Alice’s Day work for Daily Info Oxford (2021 – 2022), and a number of private commissions.
I love tackling any illustration project that requires a bit of life, energy and emotion, with characters who have a sense of purpose. My approach is playful, inventive and human – even though a lot of thought, redrawing and editing goes into my work I like it to look ‘effortless!’
