I am a contemporary artist based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

I approach painting in an intuitive and immediate way, and work in oils because I really value the physicality of the paint. The commitment involved in every mark made and the limitations created by slow drying times are part of what I really like as a painter. Painting in oils feels messy, human, expressive and creatively juicy.

Colour is central to the way I work. I start with a contemplative process, and find that the answers often arrive in the abstract. In colours and forms and even scents or temperature or time of day before any thoughts of a certain place or subject.

My work centres on an instinctive need to connect my inner world with the sensory and emotional experience of being immersed in landscapes. This reflects my deep relationships with plants and places, and the way I think about them as forms of essential emotional infrastructure.
